To make room for them Monday, Chicago designated reliever Kameron Loe for assignment and optioned outfielder Dave Sappelt to its affiliate in Iowa.
Analysis: The 28-year-old Sweeney has spent time in the majors with the White Sox, Red Sox and Athletics. In 23 games this season at Iowa, Sweeney was hitting .337 with six home runs and 16 RBIs.
