Townsend rallies No. 23 Zag women past LMU in WCC opener

LOS ANGELES (AP) Jill Townsend had nine of her 19 points in the fourth quarter and grabbed 10 rebounds, Jenn Wirth also had a double-double and No. 23 Gonzaga opened West Coast Conference play with a come-from behind 65-62 win over Loyola Marymount on Monday night.

The Bulldogs trailed by 11 early in the second quarter and didn't take the lead until LeeAnne Wirth and her twin sister Jen had back-to-back layups for a 60-58 lead with 2:51 to play.

Jenn Wirth had 14 points, 10 rebounds, four assists and two steals and LeeAnne had 10 points. Cierra Walker added 12 points on four 3-pointers for the Bulldogs (6-2).

Ariel Johnson had 16 points for the Lions (1-5) and Chelsey Gipson added 10.

Loyola Marymount scored the last eight points of the first quarter, marking a 13-2 run, for a 19-13 lead. The Lions then scored the first five points of the second quarter and led 33-25 at the half.

Gonzaga shot 31% in the first half while LMU, tabbed for sixth in the WCC preseason poll, shot 46%.

The Bulldogs led for one possession in the middle of the third quarter and trailed 48-44 at the end. Townsend scored the first six points of the fourth quarter. She also grabbed her offensive rebound with 34 seconds to go and then assisted on Jenn Wirth's layup for a 64-60 lead with 20 seconds left.

LMU went 18 of 20 from the foul line but the two misses came inside the final two minutes.

Gonzaga is scheduled to play at Pepperdine on Wednesday night.
